“‘When there are educators who look like their students. It can provide examples of how academic success might look. As a Black educator, I can prove to my students that they are capable. I get to give them the opportunity to see how I’ve created trajectories for myself in order to achieve success academically and professionally. I want my students to expand their trajectories,’ says Shareefah Mason, a Dallas-based educator” (XQ Rethink Together, 2022). Recently some students from the DU Graduate School of Professional Psychology (GSPP) led a march bringing awareness to the systemic issues that BIPOC students have been facing and express the frustration about the imminent departure of Black faculty members. GSPP is now losing four BIPOC faculty next month, with three of them being Black women. Campuses across the nation have been experiencing BIPOC faculty stepping down from their colleges and universities, regardles...

Child Abuse and Families with Trans Youth by Kiristen Hubbard

In February, Texas Governor Greg Abbott called upon licensed professionals and people in the community to report the parents of transgender youth who were assumed to be receiving gender affirming care. The Texas governor made these statements soon after Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton stated his opinion on trans youth receiving hormone therapy, puberty blockers, and gender affirmation surgeries. “Paxton issued the opinion after the Legislature failed last year to pass a bill that would have made it a felony alongside physical and sexual abuse to provide such care to minors. An opinion is an interpretation of existing law; it does not change the law itself but can affect how it is enforced” (NBC News, 2022). Many articles are stating that Governor Abbott is declaring war on trans youth and families by threatening to have Child Protective Services (CPS) get involved for providing their children access to gender affirming care. In addition to the families facing CPS calls and poss...

Strong Black Woman Syndrome by Kiristen Hubbard

Hold your hand up and put a finger down if you’ve ever said these statements or had these experiences. “I’m okay because I have to be”. Never processing emotions because you have to keep it together for those around you. Never allowing yourself to break down because if you’re breaking down then who is being strong? Working through the pain because letting things affect you shows weakness. “If I don’t do it, it just won’t get done”. How many fingers do you still have up? Now take a second, how many fingers do you think the Black women in your life would have up? One of the first words that we as Black women tend to describe ourselves with is strong, when what we are really saying is that we are resilient and often making sacrifices for those around us. Fighting daily battles of systematic oppression and disadvantages all while trying to manage our personal lives. Our strength is often equated with our work ethic and ability to keep pushing, it’s pretty much the foundation for Bl...
